Note : Phillip A. Sharp, a native of Pendleton County, graduated from Union College in 1966 with a bachelor’s degree in chemistry and mathematics. He earned his Ph.D in chemistry from the University of Illinois. In 1974 Dr. Sharp became a research scientist at MIT. On December 10, 1993 Dr. Sharp was a co-recipient of the Nobel Prize in Medicine for his work in molecular genetics. In addition to numerous awards and honors Dr. Sharp has also received the 1988 Union College Alumni Association Distinguished Service Award and in 1993 was inducted into the Union College Hall of Fame. The Sharp Academic Center is named in honor of Dr. Sharp and his wife Ann (Union, 1966).
